Our History

In 2009, a vision took root in the quiet district of Belmont, Westmoreland, that would transform secondary education in western Jamaica. Belmont Academy was born not from circumstance, but from a deliberate commitment to create an institution where young people could flourish academically, develop practical skills, and prepare for leadership in an evolving world. From its inception, the school was guided by the principle that education should do more than impart knowledge—it should cultivate character, inspire innovation, and build the foundation for lifelong success. The early years of Belmont Academy were marked by steady growth and an unwavering focus on establishing a culture of excellence. Under the dedicated leadership of educators who believed in the potential of every student, the school began to develop its distinctive approach to secondary education. This philosophy emphasized not just academic achievement, but the integration of practical learning, creative expression, and real-world application. By 2010, just one year after opening, the National Education Inspectorate recognized the school's strong foundation with a 'GOOD' rating, affirming the quality of its leadership, teaching, and student support systems. As the years progressed, Belmont Academy's reputation for excellence continued to grow, attracting recognition on both national and regional levels. The school's commitment to Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) bore fruit as it consistently achieved top rankings in Jamaica's TVET/CAP programmes for three successive years. This success reflected the Academy's belief that education should prepare students with industry-relevant competencies and internationally recognized certifications, ensuring graduates were ready to contribute meaningfully to Jamaica's economic development. The school's innovative spirit reached new heights with groundbreaking initiatives that set it apart as an educational pioneer. Belmont Academy conceptualized and implemented the Ministry of Education's Edutrepreneurial Hub, where students manufacture metal furnishings to Bureau of Standards Jamaica specifications for use throughout the education system. The installation of a fully integrated solar energy programme made the school among the first in the English-speaking Caribbean to operate largely independently of the national electricity grid, demonstrating a commitment to environmental sustainability that extends far beyond the classroom. Today, Belmont Academy stands as a testament to what can be achieved when vision meets dedication. Ranked 13th nationally in external examinations and recognized in 2023 as having Jamaica's number one value-added Sixth Form programme, the school continues to exceed expectations while maintaining the values that have guided it since its founding. With consistent 'GOOD' ratings from the National Education Inspectorate in 2010, 2016, and 2023, and under the continued leadership of award-winning educators, Belmont Academy remains committed to its founding purpose: shaping young minds that will think, create, and contribute to building a better Jamaica and world.
